Colby Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) and Khamzat Chimaev (12-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC), two of the best welterweights on the planet, are already in the works for a high stakes clash at UFC 285 in March next year. However, the latest rumors have suggested that Covington vs. Chimaev might actually headline the event itself.

From what has been seen, everything indicates that the UFC wants to keep Khamzat Chimaev at Welterweight, despite his recent issue on the scale which caused the massive drama before UFC 279. This will be a mouth-watering fight for fans and MMA results for this bout could go either way.

Colby Covington and Khamzat Chimaev may fight for the #1 contender spot in welterweight

In a recent interview with The MacLife, UFC prez Dana White stated that he has a fight in mind for Chechnya-born-Swede and it would be precisely against Colby Covington, as the co-main event of UFC 285, which is currently set to feature a trilogy fight between 170-pound champ Leon Edwards and his predecessor Kamaru Usman.

In the meantime, former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen has revealed the recent rumors that have surged, claiming that the Covington vs. Chimaev fight might actually be the fight headlining UFC 285 instead of Edwards vs Usman 3.

“Kids on the Underground are saying that Colby Covington and Chimaev have agreed to a five round main event at UFC 285,” Sonnen said recently on his YouTube channel. “Now to put that in perspective for you, we just got done with 280. So you’re looking about five months down the road, that would bring you to about March of 2023.”

“Apparently they’ve agreed to it and it’ll be a number one contender’s bout,” he added.

Slowly becoming one of the most dominant fighters of all time, Khamzat Chimaev is undefeated in his professional MMA career. At UFC 279, he took no hits while submitting Kevin Holland in mere seconds. A few months earlier, he also defeated Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision at UFC 273, which was one of the best fights of the year.

Meanwhile, Colby Covington is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal illusion at UFC 272. There’s nothing barring “CHaos” from being the first fighter to stop Chimaev, but he also understands that even a small mistake will prove to be very costly against his opponent. Nevertheless, a win over Chimaev is expected to earn Covington will have another shot at the welterweight title.
