Former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington is all set to fight former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler at UFC Fight Night 156 which will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark on August 3.
Before the announcement of Colby fighting Lawler, it was widely assumed amongst MMA fans that Covington would fight Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title next. Kamaru was coming off of a dominating unanimous decision win over Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 earlier this year in March. Now all of a sudden, Jorge Masvidal has been gunning for a title shot against Usman.
Masvidal is coming off of a 5-second KO win over Ben Askren at UFC 239 in Las Vegas and before that he knocked out Darren Till in his backyard back in March at UFC London. On the other hand, Masvidal and Covington are great friends and training partners. However, despite this Covington doesn’t believe that Masvidal deserves a title shot.

“Look at his resume; look at mine. He’s on a two-fight win streak,” Covington. “He’s 2-2 in his last four fights, so you’re going to give a 50-50 fighter a title shot? That doesn’t really make a lot of sense.”
“We are one of the greatest duos in MMA history,” Covington said. “We’re the Batman and Robin of MMA right now. Of course, I’m Batman, and he’s Robin, but it’s a dynamic duo, and we’re doing great things in the sport. But he’s going to sit back while I get my undisputed title shot.” (H/T – MMAJunkie.com)
