Colby Covington doesn’t believe Michael “Venom” Page is truly deserving of the hype that he’s getting from UFC fans.
Page, a former Bellator MMA superstar, marked his UFC debut at UFC 299 this 9th March in Miami where he faced Kevin Holland who, despite being ranked at 13th in the Welterweight division at the time, was seen as a strong opening for Page.
During the fight, “MVP” showcased what makes him special, keeping Holland largely out of their fight and picking him apart over three rounds to take a clear unanimous decision victory.
Colby Covington’s harsh criticism towards Michael Page
In the aftermath of UFC 299, Colby Covington, a former multiple-time 170-pound title challenger, has been vocal in his criticism of Michael Page’s performance. Page, who himself insisted that he was not at his best showing on his Octagon debut, was met with harsh words from Covington, who dismissed Page’s performance as unimpressive.
Speaking to Submission Radio, “Chaos” insisted that the promotion is trying to utilize the hype surrounding Page, while also pointing out that Page had lost a majority decision under the BKFC banner to Mike Perry in August 2022, at BKFC 27: London.
“The guy’s trash,” said Covington. “He’s a bum. I mean, look at his last fight before that. He got beat by a guy that fights in Indian casinos. He got beat by Mike Perry. We saw how the Mike Perry experience ended up in the UFC – guy getting his nose crooked, smashed and knocked out like three or four times in a row. It just shows: The kid’s just hyped. They’re trying to hype him up.”
Covington further ripped Page over the UFC offering him Holland- whom he calls as a “complete scrub”, while insisting that if they are to ever face off against each other in the Octagon, it would be an easy paycheck for Covington.
“They’re giving him a guy in Kevin Holland who’s a complete scrub – I mean, 50/50 fighter at best in the division. And that’s all you could do? Just that pathetic fight and that pathetic walkout? Like, that wasn’t entertaining, man. It doesn’t work. It only works when you’re good and you’re at the top of the division, not when you’re fighting scrubs that shouldn’t even be fighting in the UFC in the first place. So I didn’t make anything of it. I just saw another easy money paycheck if the UFC ever wants to give me that in the future.” [H/T MMA Junkie]
For his part, Covington has gone 2-3 in his last five outings in the cage- having suffered a unanimous decision loss to the reigning champion Leon Edwards at UFC 296 back in December 2023 which was his most recent fight.
