MMA and pro-wrestling are much closer than they seem to be on the outside. Much like pro-wrestlers, modern MMA also requires fighters to better promote themselves. Fighters often promote themselves by doing sensational post-fight interviews. One such fighter who possesses the gift of gab is UFC welterweight Colby Covington. The welterweight has portrayed himself as a villainous fighter and he has recently given us some insight on the way he promotes himself.

Covington has a MMA record of 13-1 and is currently on a five fight win streak. He defeated Demian Maia in his last fight via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 119. His comments in his post-fight interview after defeating Maia, in which he called Brazil a ‘dump’ and Brazilians to be “filthy animals”, had caused a huge controversy.
“Chaos” recently made an appearance at The MMA India Show. When he was asked about him portraying a pro-wrestlingesque “heel” character and promoting himself as a fighter with a “villianous” persona, he stated that it was indeed true and that MMA is closely related to pro-wrestling. “Triple C” also took a shot at the champion by claiming that “Tyquil” Woodley (in reference to his recent pro-wrestling match against a fighter imitating Tyron Woodley) could beat Tyron Woodley in a match. Here’s what the American Top Team member had to say:
“Everyday it’s pro-wrestling. People just don’t get it. Everyday when you wake up, you’re shooting promos and you’re talking business and you’re encountering people. There’s ‘heels’, ‘babyfaces’, there are also a bunch of ‘marks’ out there. So everyday, I take a piece of pro-wrestling and I try to put it into MMA”
Covington’s statements about promoting himself like pro-wrestler are interesting and seems to be a very effective way of promotion indeed.
The video of Covington’s interview will shortly be uploaded in an upcoming episode of The MMA India Show.
