Colby Covington never shies away from putting his word out on topics away from the Octagon, and in a recent conversation, he said that men should not be allowed to compete against women in any sport, especially boxing, as he finds it unethical.

Covington’s comments come in the wake of USA Boxing allowing trans fighters to compete against women, as per the new policies of the governing body. The decision has raised many eyebrows in the combat sports scene and has been received with mixed responses.

The primary reason for the new policy to not be widely accepted and appreciated by fans is that many believe its not only disadvantageous for women fighters, it also puts them at severe risk of injuries and potential detriments to their careers.

In the history of combat sports, there are instances of trans fighters competing against women and there are examples of the female fighter suffering gruesome injuries. One incident that went viral was transgender fighter Fallon Fox broke the skull of Tamikka Brents at CCCW (Capital City Cage Wars) back in 2014.

Colby Covington shows concern for female fighters after USA Boxing’s decision

Known for his outspoken persona, Covington went all out in reprimanding the decision and while speaking to Tomi Lahren of OutKick, the UFC welterweight star admitted that he at first saw it as a publicity stunt.

“Yeah. My first reaction is I think it’s a PR stunt. I think that they’re just doing this because no one cares about USA Boxing anymore,” said Covington. “Nobody’s talking about USA Boxing, so they have to do something to get some publicity because anybody in their right mind thinking that this is a good idea needs to speak up immediately.”

He further added that it was “disgusting” for USA Boxing to take the decision and to allow “biological men” to compete with women, showing his concern for the female fighters’ safety. Covington even added that he doesn’t want to see any female boxer lose their lives as a result of this decision.

“So this is disgusting. Biological men should have no place in women’s sports,” the former title contender went on, “I mean, I can’t imagine being a woman my whole life and having a fair playing field competing against the other women. And then all of a sudden they just say, hey, we’re going to let a biological man come compete in our sport. It’s unethical, it’s dangerous, and I don’t want to see anybody get killed. So we need to reverse this and we need to hold the line and not let this happen.”
