One of the biggest Grudge Match in UFC history is finally happening as best friends turned rivals, Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal will go toe-to-toe against each other at UFC 272. The welterweights will be headlining the UFC 272 event on March 5 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This is fight is going to be one of the most hyped matchups of all time considering the story behind this fight. The fight will take place in the welterweight division and will be for five rounds. UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell announced the fight on ESPN on Tuesday.

Colby Covington vs. Jorge Masvidal to headline UFC 272 on March 5

UFC 272 will now be headlined by this grudge matchup between Covington and Masvidal. In the co-main event, UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski was supposed to defend his title in a trilogy fight against Max Holloway but unfortunately, Max had to pull out due to an injury and will be replaced by Korean Zombie. The fight is now moved to UFC 273. A UFC Bantamweight Championship title unification rematch between current champion Aljamain Sterling and current interim titleholder Petr Yan was expected to take place at this event. But now this fight has also been postponed to UFC 273 in April.

Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal are former teammates at the American Top Team under coach Mike Brown. The duo used to be training partners and also stayed together as roommates for a while. The best friends duo then turned into arch-rivals after some dispute in their gym. Since that day they have been on each other’s radar.

Colby Covington is coming off a title fight loss against ufc welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. The duo fought for the second time after their first fight at UFC 245 ended in a TKO win for Usman who finished Colby in the fifth round. Colby then bounced back from that defeat with a dominant win over former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. He dominated Woodley for four rounds before Woodley suffered an injury in the fifth round and the bout was stopped and Colby Covington was declared the winner by TKO. Now Colby Covington is all hyped up for this matchup with Jorge. He texted ESPN after the fight was announced that he hopes Masvidal shows up for the fight.

“He better f—ing show up,” Covington said in a text message to ESPN Tuesday.

Jorge Masvidal is also coming off a KO loss to Kamaru Usman in their welterweight title rematch. He first faced Usman at UFC 251 as a late replacement for Burns. He lost that fight via decision. In the rematch which took place at UFC 261, Kamaru Usman knocked out Jorge Masvidal in the second round. Jorge Masvidal’s last win came against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in their BMF title fight.

The fight is as intriguing as it can get considering the history between them.
