Two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Colby Covington has stated that he has no plans to move down to the lightweight division even after failing to capture the welterweight title in his last two title fights. Many fans have started to speculate that Colby should start to consider a change in the weight class as he has been the number one contender in the welterweight division for the past three years and has already fought for the title twice but has not been able to get past the champion Kamaru Usman. Even after failing to get the title in two opportunities, Colby is confident in his skills and has no interest in moving down a weight class as he feels he might bully the lower division.
Colby Covington first fought for the welterweight title against Kamaru Usman. He had a great fight in the early round and found success multiple times but he was badly hurt in the fifth round of the fight and was finished Usman in the last moments of the fight. Colby Covington then challenged Kamru Usman at UFC 268. Usman had early success in this fight but Colby then started to gain momentum in the later rounds but couldn’t win the fight as he was knocked down twice in the second round which eventually resulted in him losing the fight.
Colby Covington in his recent interview was asked whether he would consider moving down to lightweight after failing to capture the belt.
“I’m not a bully. I’m not like Dustin ‘Louisiana swamp trash’ Poirier. That guy, he’s a bully and he has to cut all that weight. He grew and he hit a growth spurt in his mid-to-late 20s and he’s a bigger guy now. He walks around at 185-190lbs,” Covington said. “I don’t want to struggle. When you cut that type of weight James, it’s so unhealthy for your body. Taking all that water out of your brain and dehydrating your body like that, it’s not good.”
“So I’m thinking about the long run in my life. I’m not cheating, I’m not using steroids, I’m not cutting massive amounts of weight — things that destroy your body and take years off your life. So I do it the right way and just show up to fight at my natural weight class that I weigh. I don’t have to cut weight. I just show up and fight and show the world what I’m capable of, show the world my potential, and that’s how it should be. All these guys think they’re going to have such an advantage by cutting a lot of weight, but it’s a myth. It just shows how mentally weak people are.”
