The Indian wrestling team had a solid outing at the Commonwealth games on Day 8 as the team picked up four medals.

Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar picked up a gold medal in the 74KG category and showcased a dominant performance from start to end. On his way to the medal, Sushil defeated Canada’s Jevon Balfour, Pakistan’s Muhammad Asad Butt and Australia’s Connor Evans.
In the final, he defeated South Africa’s Johannes Botha. This is Sushil’s third successive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Elsewhere, Commonwealth Games debutant Rahul Aware also secured a gold medal. Aware, who competed in the 57KG category defeated Canada’s Steven Takahashi. He picked up the win with a score of 15-7 and secured the same despite trailing 6-7 at one point of the bout.
Prior to his final bout, Aware secured victories over England’s George Ramm, Australia’s Thomas Cicchini and Pakistan’s Muhammad Bilal. After the fight, he revealed that he was having problems with his leg during the fight and dedicated the medal to his guru and former CWG medallist Harishchandra Birajdar.
Babita and Kiran shine
Elsewhere, Babita Phogat and Kiran also picked up medals for the nation. Defending champion Babita had to settle for a silver medal in the 53KG. She lost 2-5 to Canada’s Diana Weicker in the final and failed to replicate the gold medal outing that she produced back in Glasgow.
On her way to the final, Babita secured wins over England’s George Ramm, Australia’s Thomas Cicchini and Pakistan’s Muhammad Bilal.
Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games debutant Kiran won Bronze through the repechage. Kiran fought in the 76KG category and defeated Mauritian Katouskia Pariadhaven by fall in the repechage to win her bronze.
Apart from the four medals in wrestling, the Indian team also won three more medals in the day which in turn took their tally for the day to seven medals.
