There’s always a debate amongst sports fans in general about which sport has the fittest athlete on the planet. Each sport is unique in the sense that they require different physical ability, mental preparedness, different amount of attention and different type of conditioning.
It’s improper to compare a Cricketer to a baseball player or a boxer to a Mixed Martial artist.
However, you must have always wondered what would happen if the playing fields were labelled and each athlete was made to compete against each other or which athlete would be the fittest under neutral circumstances?
Sports Illustrated has released a list of 50 fittest athletes on the planet with the help of their own experts based on the athletes’ performance in the last 12 months.
We take a look at the list and with no one’s surprise, the list includes Irish Mixed Martial artist Conor McGregor and No. 9 and Mexcian Boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at No. 10.
Canelo Alvarez is ranked in at N0. 10, the Mexican boxing star had a mixed 2018 with him testing positive for Clenbuterol early last year ahead of his rematch against Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin and he was handed a six-month-long suspension.
But he made a comeback and went toe-to-toe with the most feared boxer in the middleweight division and managed to beat him via unanimous decision to win the WBC and WBA middleweight title at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sept. 15, he then returned to the ring on Dec. 15 to make an easy work of British champion Rocky Fielding at the Madison Square Garden.
Irish Mixed Martial Artist Conor McGregor made it to No.9 on the list. Even though he lost his last fight to Russian champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. But his ability to go back and forth MMA and Boxing and then go 10-rounds with Floyd Mayweather speaks about his physical toughness. He is a tw0-division world champion having knocked out Jose Aldo within 13 seconds to destroying Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight title back in 2016.
