McGregor retiring to set up for an even bigger comeback?

The announcement marks as McGregor’s third retirement in mere four years. Everytime he retired, he came back with an even bigger fight announcement. The stat does give the MMA community some hope of watching him back in action in near future.

He first announced his retirement back in April 2016 after his defeat against arch rival Nate Diaz. It was reportedly due to negotiation issues with the UFC in setting up a rematch against Diaz. “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s later,” he tweeted. (via Twitter):

He then again announced his retirement in March 2019. UFC President Dana White believed it was due to UFC not fulfilling his demand of an ownership stake in the company. (via Twitter):

The MMA community might hoping be this retirement as a set up for something huge in near future as well. Especially at this interesting phase where the 31-year old is in the prime of his life. Many options like a fight with Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz trilogy and even a title shot against Kamaru Usman was associated with McGregor. Obviously an unprecedented rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov was always on cards. White also had McGregor fighting in the newly established Fight Island which could have been a huge revenue making option as well.

Recently another former double champ Henry Cejudo announced his retirement in his prime which shook the world. Also light heavyweight king and P4P #1 Jon Jones and BMF champ Jorge Masvidal asked for their release which might indicate negotiation problems within the UFC.

‘The Notorious’ legend!

Regardless what McGregor has done for the sport is unmatched for. He literally transcended the sport towards the top. His highlights include first winning featherweight belt by knocking out long reigning champ Jose Aldo within just 13 seconds. He then moved up to destroy lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter in the history to hold belts in two weight classes simultaneously.

He fought two memorable wars with Nate Diaz. He then made a crossover to boxing to take on legend Floyd Mayweather in what is known as ‘The Money Fight’. He also has a knockout in three divisions of the UFC. Retired or not, we thank this legend for the memories.
