Former UFC double champion Conor McGregor has turned down the talks about a rematch against boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr for next year, saying that he’s not interested.
Mayweather says he wants Conor rematch as he doesn’t want “any real punishment” in the ring
The first meeting between Mayweather and McGregor, which took place on the 26th of August in 2017 in Las Vegas, was a professional fight, pitting the undefeated boxing legend against a two-division UFC champion who had just won a lightweight title with a stunning knockout of Eddie Alvarez.
In one of the highest-grossing combat sports pay-per-views of all time, Mayweather’s 10th round KO win over McGregor improved his record to 50–0 and he later retired and has only fought in exhibitions since, including a previous appearance for RIZIN where he made quick work of the superstar of the kickboxing Tenshin Nasukawa.
Talk of a rematch between Mayweather and McGregor has been on and off since they first met, with both sides pressuring the public to shoot each other. Recently, UFC President Dana White denied rumors that the sequel would happen soon, saying that when McGregor fights again, he “will be in the cage.”
However, in an interview with The Daily Mail, Floyd Mayweather said talks were underway for a new boxing bout between him and Conor McGregor. The 45-year-old will fight Japanese MMA star Mikuru Asakura in an exhibition boxing bout this Saturday at the Super in Saitama. He plans to meet McGregor in 2023.
“I want to go out there this weekend and have fun,” said Mayweather, “Then I have another exhibition in Dubai in November [against Youtuber Deji] and me and Conor McGregor in 2023. We don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition or a real fight. But there’s been talks of both. I would prefer an exhibition.”
Exhibition fights have been much more to Mayweather’s taste since his retirement.
“I am not into fights where I am going to take any real punishment,” Mayweather went on, “So, guys like Conor McGregor and guys that don’t really hit hard such as YouTubers or UFC guys, I don’t really mind colliding with those kinds of individuals but nothing where I am going to put myself in a position where I am going to harm myself or hurt myself.”
