UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is currently on a fifteen month long hiatus from MMA. The hopes about McGregor’s return to the octagon are dying a slow and painful death with each passing day. Many fighters as well as pundits including the UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov believe that the Irishman will never step foot inside the octagon again. However, if some latest news reports are to be believed then McGregor might soon be on his way back to the UFC.
McGregor last fought in the octagon against former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. He won the title in that fight by defeating Alvarez via TKO due to punches in the second round. He has since been on a hiatus from MMA and instead competed against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a boxing match last August.
“The Notorious” earned around a whopping $100 million to fight Mayweather in a boxing ring. He allegedly wants a similar pay-cheque from the UFC for his fights. McGregor had demanded a share in the UFC to ever compete inside the octagon again. His demands were immediately rejected by UFC president, Dana White. Hence, the UFC and McGregor have since been in a long and gruelling negotiation process.
According to noted combat sports journalist Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, “Mystic Mac” and the UFC are really close to agreeing a deal. There also has been some hearsay about McGregor fighting inside the octagon at-least twice in 2018.
This is surely a great news from the entire MMA community since McGregor has become an international celebrity and if he returns to the UFC then a lot of people will directly benefit from that.
