Jose Aldo is coming back to the fight game, and one who couldn’t be happier on the news is none other than Conor McGregor, who is thrilled to see his former rival return to action.
Jose Aldo’s thrilling comeback to the UFC
In an exciting turn of events, UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo is making a triumphant return to the world of mixed martial arts. After a brief retirement, the Brazilian fighter is set to step back into the Octagon at UFC 301. The event, scheduled for May 4, will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—Aldo’s own backyard.
Aldo, a former UFC featherweight champion, left fans wondering why he hung up his gloves in the first place. His retirement came less than two years ago in September 2022- a month after losing to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278.
In the meantime, he has kept busy with boxing matches, including a memorable draw against former UFC foe Jeremy Stephens. Now, he’s ready to trade the ring for the cage once more.
Conor McGregor reacts
Conor McGregor, who famously dethroned Aldo to become the UFC Featherweight Champion at UFC 295 back in December 2015, expressed his delight at seeing his old rival return.
“Look at Aldo now, great to see Jose back, really happy to see Jose back,” said McGregor on The MMA Hour. “I was actually taken back that he did retire when he retired. He was in contention for the f*****g title, he was in title contention from where I was looking.”
“I’m happy to see Jose back and I wonder if it was a business play that didn’t play out for him, was he trying to press for more and then walked away and they let him? He went and did his boxing matches and all the rest of it. Now, he’s back and I’m excited to see him back, always great for the company, let’s go,” McGregor added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
