Conor McGregor, a former UFC champion, is still interested in becoming president of Ireland.
Without a doubt, Dublin native McGregor is the biggest celebrity in MMA history. But while facing the longest hiatus in his professional boxing career, he declared his intention to run for Irish president.
There is only one issue. It’s not quite as easy as putting your name in the bucket to run for president in Ireland.
Here is how fact-checkers at European media outlet Euronews summed it up:
“A presidential nominee has to be an Irish citizen over the age of 35, criteria which McGregor meets. But the nominee must also either by nominated by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas, the Irish parliament, or by at least four of Ireland’s 31 local authorities.”
Regretfully, McGregor’s backing is obviously lacking. In fact, it appears that the prospect of him holding public office disgusts a large number of the politicians who have any influence over the issue.
Conor McGregor is refusing to give up
McGregor is still interested in running even though he is obviously lacking confidence.
The Irishman stated he is just waiting to see what happens in a recent interview with media personality Tucker Carlson. Additionally, he implied that his native country’s democracy is failing if he is prevented from standing for president.
“I think November 11 will be the election date,” McGregor said. “There is a 60-day run before that. I will continue to call for the democratic process to be carried out, let the people make their own decisions, and then see the results.
“If they continue to deny this, it will become increasingly clear that we are not a democracy, and they will eventually have to answer to their constituents.” Accountability will exist. To what extent will they be held responsible? They must make a decision.
Dustin Poirier stopped Conor McGregor in 2021, and he hasn’t fought since. He lost against the American for the second time in a row. He defeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in 2020, which was his most recent victory. In his own nation, he was just held civically accountable for sexual assault.
