Former featherweight and lightweight UFC champion Conor McGregor is all set to fight Donald ‘Cowboy’Cerrone at UFC 246 which will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Conor McGregor vs Donald Cerrone

The news was first reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN.

Breaking: Per Dana White (@danawhite), Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) has signed to face Donald Cerrone (@Cowboycerrone) at UFC 246 on Jan. 18, at welterweight. “Conor has signed and Cerrone is ready to go.” – Okamoto tweeted.

The fight will take place in the welterweight division. Both McGregor and Cerrone have fought at 170lbs before.

This will be McGregor’s first bout in since UFC 229, which took place in October last year. In that fight, McGregor lost the fight via submission in the fourth round. McGregor had himself announced in Moscow last month that he was going to fight in January of 2020, but didn’t specify the opponent. There were speculations regarding Cerrone and Justin Gaethje being the front runner.

This is Donald Cerrone’s biggest fight of his career. He is coming off two back to back knockout losses. In his last fight, he was knocked out in the first round by Justin Gaethje at UFC Fight Night 158. Before that he lost to Tony Ferguson at UFC 238 in June earlier this year. His last win came against Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 151 in May. Cowboy has been extremely active this year as he has fought four times.

When Cerrone takes on McGregor in January next year, he would have fought five times in a span of 12 months.

McGregor, on the other hand, hasn’t won a fight inside the Octagon in over three-years. His last win in the UFC came against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 20t5, where he won the fight via TKO in the second round. His last fight against Khabib at UFC 229 generated a record 2.4 Million PPV buys.
