Conor McGregor is not only aiming for a victorious return to the Octagon when he takes on Michael Chandler, but the former UFC double champ is also demanding a Welterweight title shot following it.

“The Notorious” is on the verge of making his comeback following a prolonged recovery from his fractured leg and is in the works to face Chandler on his return. The two have already coached on The Ultimate Fighter to build up the hype, and the Irishman even claims that the fight against “Iron” will be his debut at welterweight.

“170. I’m 170 next, leave it out,” McGregor told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, while adding that he might be attending the trilogy between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman 3 at UFC 286 this weekend and has taken an interest in facing the winner after Chandler.

“Yeah, I’d like so, I’d like that,” said McGregor about wanting a shot at the 170-pound gold. “I may be present for the card, we are making moves at the Black Forge in London, so I was scheduled to go out there so after this, Gunni’s (Gunnar Nelson) also on the card so it would be good to see him live. It would be good to watch that welterweight title for sure.” [H/T]

Conor McGregor may earn the chance to become UFC’s first three weight champ

While its unclear whether a win over Chandler would earn McGregor a direct shot at the welterweight belt, but both Edwards, the reigning champ and Usman, the former champ, have shown interest in fighting McGregor in the past.

If he does earn a title shot and McGregor ends up defeating the winner of Edwards vs. Usman 3, then the Irishman would be the first ever three weight champ at the UFC. However, he is currently on a two fight losing streak, both of them against longtime rival Dustin Poirier.
