UFC Bantamweight prospect Cory Sandhagen has released a statement after a very close decision loss to former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC on ESPN 27.

UFC on ESPN 27 : T.J. Dillashaw vs Cory Sandhagen

UFC bantamweight prospect Cory Sandhagen’s amazing march towards title shot was stopped in tracks by former champion TJ Dillashaw who came back to completion after serving two years of ban. The duo put on the fight of the year performance and made it to the bell. The judges scored the fight a split decision for TJ Dillashaw. Though many fans and MMA fighters felt that the fight could have gone either side. Cory did a lot of damage to TJ and it was visible clearly on TJ’s face but it was Dillashaw who pushed the pace majority of the time and also landed some good takedowns that might have been the reason that the judges gave the fight to TJ.

The fight was for the no.1 contender spot in the highly stacked bantamweight division. The winner of this fight was going to fight the winner between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan after they settle their dispute in the octagon in their rematch for the bantamweight championship. They both fought previously at UFC 259 and the fight ended in DQ as Yan kneed Sterling in the head while he was on the ground which resulted in him losing his belt.

Sandhagen Embracing The Hype | UFC

Cory Sandhagen was just one win away from getting the title shot, but it looks like his title shot dream will be kept at a halt as the former two-time bantamweight champion TJ took over his spot. After the fight, Cory Sandhagen handled his razor-sharp decision loss very well and showed class while talking about it in the post-fight interview.

“I know I had him hurt more times than me,” Sandhagen told Megan Olivi on the UFC on ESPN 27 post-fight show. “I think I was landing the way cleaner shots. I was picking him apart. I guess I should’ve done more. That’s on me. … I told myself I was winning the fifth round. I thought that I did. I don’t know. What can you do? I thought I made really good adjustments as the fight was going on. What can you do? I guess I’ll learn from it. I’ll still be world champ. I’ll still do all the things I said I was going to do. I just have got to learn and get better, I guess.”

“Sean Shelby just talked to me in the back,” Sandhagen said. “I made him pinky-promise me that I’m one fight away from winning the title. He came back and said, ‘There’s nothing I can do about (the loss), but I promise you you’re still one fight away from the title.’ I said, ‘I’m going to make you pinky-promise me.’ He did, so that’s still what we’re looking at.”

“I don’t want to be a little whiny baby,” Sandhagen said. “I’m going to take it. I’m going to get better from it. That’s what I’m going to do, and I’m still going to win a world championship hopefully still next year.”

He also posted a photo on Instagram and congratulated TJ for his win.

“Nice job, TJ. A couple mistakes won it for em.. I’m still champ next year. Heart strong always. Journey continues”

This loss to a former champion is just a minor setback in Sandhagen’s career and the way he showed maturity after losing a close fight shows that he has a lot of potentials and will he will be a champion one day.
