The curtain has fallen on the career of Amanda Nunes, and Cris Cyborg feels disappointed that she couldn’t share the cage with her adversary for a second time.

I had it in my heart to make the rematch before I retired, or before she retired: Cris Cyborg

Amanda Nunes was originally slated for a trilogy fight with Julianna Pena for the main event of UFC 289 last weekend, but Pena was forced to pull out of the bout due to an injury and was replaced by Irene Aldana on short notice.

The main event saw domination from “The Lioness” as she defended her Bantamweight crown once again, winning the bout via unanimous decision. While many expected the result, the unexpected occurred after the fight. To the surprise of everyone, including Pena who was cage side, Nunes announced her retirement from MMA.

The incident came as a shock to many, but not Cyborg, the celebrated “Grand Slam Champion” of MMA, who told James Lynch that while she expected Nunes to retire sooner or later, what disappoints her is that a rematch between them never took place.

“I’m not surprised, she’s been fighting for a long time,” said Cyborg in the interview. “I know she has a wife and kids, and one kid away, you know, I think she’s just fought for a long time. She’ll have a new chapter in her life coming and she’s very excited, I’m not surprised.”

The two women’s MMA icons clashed back in 2018 in the co-main event at UFC 232, where Nunes upset Cyborg via first round knockout and became the new Featherweight champion in the process.

“…I don’t want to say upset, the right word is more disappointed [that she retired]. I had it in my heart to make the rematch before I retired, or before she retired. I think a lot of fans were asking for that too… After we fought, I know I was 14 years undefeated. I think the rematch was going to be great, but you know, I don’t know,” she added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
