Curtis Blaydes has won four fights in a row, two of them by knockout and the other two by thoroughly dominant beatdown. During an MMA career that spans 17 pro bouts over 6½ years, he has been bettered by only one opponent. Blaydes is No. 3 among heavyweights in the ESPN rankings.
It’s a very intriguing fight as there is no question Lewis has one-punch KO power, but Blaydes will have the wrestling advantage. For “The Black Beast” he believes he has what it takes to put Blaydes away given he is in the best shape of his career. But Blaydes said he won’t abandon his wrestling against Derrick Lewis as that’s what gonna help him if he wants to win.
Even though he has numerous TKO stoppages during his UFC run, he can’t seem to shake the label of a top-heavy wrestler. But he quite frankly doesn’t care what anyone thinks about his style. As long as he is winning fights, he won’t be changing the way he fights.
Curtis Blaydes talks about his gameplan
With the Lewis fight coming up this weekend, several fans have slid into Blaydes’ DMs on Instagram and told him to stand and bang with his opponent. Taking to his social media, Blaydes told these fans that they should be messaging Lewis instead, telling him to work on his takedown defense, instead of going after Blaydes and telling him not to wrestle.
“What makes me dangerous is the power that I have my hands and my will to win. I don’t care who is my opponent, I believe I have the tools to put away any man,” Lewis said on the UFC preview for the fight. “I’m coming in, in one of the best shapes of my career, a lot quicker, more agile. This is my time now to prove to these guys it’s not going to be easy whenever they see my name on that paper.”
Although many think Curtis will just take Lewis down over and over again, The Black Beast doesn’t agree. Instead, he thinks he will stuff the takedowns and get back to his feet and eventually break Blaydes. Once he does that, he is confident the finish will come and he will earn a title shot.
“This fight right here is going to be very violent and very bloody. I feel I could break Curtis by the third round and that’s what’s going to happen,” Derrick Lewis said. “This is going to be a very intense battle, we both want the title shot right after this and I believe I could get the job done.”
In fighting the main event against Lewis, who has more knockouts than any heavyweight in UFC history, Curtis has a spotlit platform and an opportunity to put on the kind of stirring performance that makes fans care about him and want to see him in the biggest fights. For a fighter who is now eyeing finally fighting for the belt shortly, a dominant win over Lewis is all he needs.
