UFC on ESPN 5 in Newark, New Jersey, featured a pivotal welterweight bout with title implications as former interim champion and #2 ranked Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington took on former welterweight champion ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler.

Lawler known for his takedown defense and coming of almost knocking out a decorated wrestler in Ben Askren in his last fight, Lawler was expected to impose some sort of a challenge to Covington. However that was not to be as Covington dominated Lawler throughout five rounds with each judge giving him all the five rounds.

That being said, it was later revealed that Covington had a compromised and curtailed camp for his preparation, courtesy of an accidental headbutt while sparring which had him with 16 stitches around three weeks ago. Covington said he had the option to pull out but thought of competing anyway. Covington also said he applied little makeup to hide it from the commission. The pictures were revealed by renowned MMA reporter Ariel Helwani. (via Twitter):

Despite Lawler’s takedown defense, Covington attempted 18 takedowns out of which he was successful five times. Not only that,  Covington managed to get into the record books, as he landed the most significant strikes in the history of the sport (510).  Of those attempts, Covington landed 172 with 120 of those landing to the head of his opponent. Covington added 20 body shots and 32 blows to Lawler’s legs.
