UFC President Dana White said he is still very much interested to book a fight between welterweight fighters Leon Edwards and Khamzat Chimaev.
Edwards vs. Chimaev is still in the plans 👀

The highly anticipated fight between rising contender Khamzat Chimaev and top contender Leon Edwards has been canceled after Leon tested positive for COVID-19. This would have been Khamzat Chimaev’s fourth outing of the year. He made his UFC debut at Fight Island in Abu Dhabi last July. He fought John Philips at UFC on ESPN 13 and defeated him via second-round submission.
He then made a quick turn around and fought within 10-days against Rhys McKee and defeated him via TKO in the first round at UFC on ESPN 14. He later fought Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Fight Night 178 last September and knocked him out in just 17-seconds.
On the other hand, this would have been Leon Edwards’ first fight in nearly eighteen months. He last fought against Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC on ESPN 4 and defeated him via unanimous decision. He was also scheduled to fight Tyron Woodley in March, but the fight got removed following the global lockdown and travel restrictions because of the surge in coronavirus.
Leon Edwards has every intention of showing that the hype around Khamzat Chimaev isn’t real and wants to derail and take the momentum on his side for his journey towards the UFC gold. Edwards is seemingly taking a big risk in putting his eight-fight winning streak on the line against the highly touted but unranked Chimaev.
Edwards and Chimaev have been scheduled to fight twice now to no avail. The pair were first slated to collide on December 19 in Las Vegas, but the matchup fell through when Edwards was sidelined with COVID-19. White and his team then rescheduled the pair to headline a card on January 20 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately, Chimaev was ultimately forced to withdraw due to complications stemming from a previous COVID-19 infection. That card will now be headlined by a welterweight fight between Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny.
Dana White still wants to make Khamzat Chimaev vs Leon Edwards
Despite two failed attempts to book this fight, White says it’s still one he’s hoping to make happen.
“That’s the fight to make,” White told ESPN recently. “I love that fight. They both already agreed to it, so we’ll get it figured out. We’ll turn that around as quickly as we can. Just want to make sure both guys are healthy; both guys had COVID.”
