Former double champ and Irish superstar Conor McGregor might have a quick turnaround!
If President Dana White is to be believed, ‘The Notorious’ is ready and good to go. White also has a suitable location in mind, the mysterious ‘Fight Island’. The UFC have been adamant on building a Fight Island so that fighters residing outside the US could compete.
That being said, McGregor’s comeback (who stays in Ireland) is highly dependent on UFC’s ability to complete building the Fight Island. The island is expected to be ready sometime in June. White addressed the issue while speaking in an interview.
“Conor’s been ready to fight for a while,” White revealed when speaking to Jim Rome on Tuesday. “He’s in shape. He’s ready to go.
“First of all, ‘Fight Island’ is going to be very important in any of these fights that are happening with people from outside the country. It kills me to do a fight with Conor without fans. Kills me. This guy’s doing almost $20 million gates.”
McGregor vs Masvidal on Fight Island??
A suitable dancing partner for McGregor has also been a mystery. White recently did hint that he has ‘something interesting’ for BMF champion Jorge Masvidal. The UFC have been setting up a title shot for Masvidal against champ Kamaru Usman. However with White claiming to have something in store for him, does point towards McGregor.
“We’re talking about a few different things,” White told ESPN. “We have something else interesting for Masvidal, too, that we were just talking about (Thursday). We’ll see.”
Masvidal has been on a tear in 2019. He first had his name in the record books for the fastest knockout in the history of the UFC. The brutal knockout came over then undefeated and highly touted Ben Askren, which extrapolated his rise. Masvidal then dominated fan favorite Nate Diaz to become the ‘BMF’ champion. Then win further skyrocketed him as a brand in the sport. His name has been associated with McGregor ever since.
McGregor on the other hand made his much anticipated return at UFC 246 in January. He announced his arrival with a quick 40 second knockout of Donald Cerrone. 2020 was supposed to be a ‘fight season’ for him but coronavirus squashed the plan.
