UFC president Dana White has just made it clear to the world that Jon Jones won’t be seen fighting in the octagon until 2022.
Jon vacated his UFC light-heavyweight belt in 2020 and decided that he will now bulk up and fight at heavyweight. He has been in talks with the UFC for a fight against the newly crowned heavyweight champion of the world Francis Ngannou. Jon Jones asked for huge money for that fight which UFC refused and instead Dana White asked Jones to fight Stipe Miocic while the division moves on with the rest of the fighters. Derrick Lewis fought Ciryl Gane and lost the fight for the interim heavyweight championship. Now Ciryl Gane seems to be next in line to face the heavyweight champion the world Francis Ngannou.
While everything is going on Dana White was pushing to get Jones vs Stipe fight a done deal but there’s no official lead on that story and now Dana White has revealed that the former light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones won’t be seen fighting in the octagon till 2022.
“He’s not fighting till next year,” White said about Jones at the UFC 265 post-fight press conference. “It’s 2021. He’s not fighting until . I’m not even thinking about him until ’22.”
“I don’t know,” White said when asked about what’s next for Miocic. “The beautiful thing about this division right now is we had this fight tonight. Now Francis versus Ciryl, you’ve got Jon Jones out there in 2022 and you got Stipe out there still, too. That means there’s a lot of fun coming up over the next year, year and a half.”
In a series of tweets posted by Jon has talked about his current situation and he also opened up on the timeline for his next fight.
“Man, I’m telling you, I’ve always been the skinny one in my family. Becoming a proper heavy weight is a lot more difficult than I had ever anticipated. I want to do it right the first time.”
“Honestly I feel like the only people that it benefits, me jumping in their [sic] early are the other heavy weights,” he wrote in the first of the two tweets. “The way I’m training, I’m gonna be a real problem this time next year. I’m comfortable enough to wait and that’s exactly what I’ll do.”
A Twitter user responded, “Another full year out?” to which Jon replied “Yes, I got a feeling you guys will still be around. “The sport should be bigger than ever by then. Always looking on the bright side.”
When do you guys think will Jon Jones return?
