Dana White names the fight he wants to see most in 2021: “It’s impossible for me not to love Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya”
During a recent interview with Aaron Bronsteter of TSN, UFC president Dana White was asked which fights does he wants to see in 2021 the most, which the fights that he believes excites him the most. After a lot of thinking and consideration, White finally answered.
“As a fan, it’s impossible for me not to love Jon Jones vs. Israel Adesanya,” White said. “I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I know Jon is moving to heavyweight, and Adesanya’s at light heavyweight, so we’ll see what happens.” Dana said.
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya have been trading words with each other for quite some time now. There has been a lot of debate going on even amongst fight fans as to how both the fighters match each other stylistically. Jon Jones is known for his terrific ground game, whereas Israel Adesanya is a striking phenom. It’s a case of a classic clash of styles.
Jon Jones vacated his light heavyweight title earlier this year after a decision win over Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 earlier this year. Following this, Jan Blachowicz knocked out Dominick Reyes at UFC 253 to become the new champion. With Jon Jones moving up to heavyweight, there’s a high chance that if the fight with Israel Adesanya does come to fruition, it will take place at heavyweight.
Israel Adesanya believes Jon Jones’days is over, stating that Bones’ last five fights are proof he’s no longer the force he once was. In his last five fights, Jon Jones registered four wins which came against Dominick Reyes, Thiago Santos, Anthony Smith, and Alexander Gustafsson. However, his win against Daniel Cormier was ruled a no-contest after a failed drug test at UFC 197.
While it doesn’t appear that Adesanya and Jones will meet in the light heavyweight division anytime soon, however, Adesanya has previously expressed willingness to move up to heavyweight. That being said, it remains to be seen if Dana would be on board with that plan.
“Who gives a f*ck about weight?” Adesanya said on Submission Radio early this year. “I’ve never given a f*ck about weight. Since when? It’s never been an issue for me. I’ve been a heavyweight in boxing [and] in kickboxing. I’ll do it again in MMA, so it’s never been an issue for me.
“He can try and run to heavyweight, but I’ll chase him down. I’ll hunt him down if I have to.”
Jon Jones is yet to make his heavyweight debut, and according to reports, would have to defeat some top-ranked fighters before getting a title shot, currently in the hands of Stipe Miocic. Dana White is yet to announce anything about Jones’s debut and also the situation with the heavyweight division. Dana definitely has something amazing planned for Jones.
