The UFC vs Ngannou saga is a couple of years old but for Dana White it is still a talking point. He remains steadfast in his belief that the promotion did everything possible to retain Francis Ngannou on the roster. Despite Ngannou’s departure after completing the terms of his contract, Dana White has no regrets.

In early 2023, as the reigning UFC heavyweight champion, Ngannou left the company. This dramatic situation unfolded over several months, with Ngannou transitioning from the feared king of the octagon to a fighter with the freedom to choose his path forward.

Dana White on Francis Ngannou’s Departure From UFC

“He went through Ciryl Gane like that – easily,” White said on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast with Shannon Sharpe. “In my opinion, he does the same thing to Francis. 100 percent. He does the same thing to Francis. Francis didn’t want to fight Jon Jones. Jon Jones is the scariest, most bad-ass fighter of all time.”

“Jon Jones has his issues outside of the octagon, which actually makes it more impressive if you think about the lifestyle that he was living, and doing this to the best fighters in the world.”

The UFC reportedly offered Ngannou the most substantial contract ever for a heavyweight fighter. However, Ngannou had various issues with his UFC situation and specific demands to stay, ultimately leading to the breakdown of negotiations for a super fight against Jon Jones.

Dana White praises Jon Jones as the “scariest, most bad-ass fighter of all time.” Despite Jones’ issues outside the octagon, his dominance against top opponents is undeniable. White believes that Ngannou didn’t want to face Jones, who remains underappreciated until he’s gone.

After leaving the UFC, Ngannou stepped into boxing matches against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. While he was competitive against Fury and suffered a knockout against Joshua, Ngannou embraced the risk and was well-compensated.

Following Ngannou’s departure, Jon Jones returned from a three-year hiatus and claimed the vacant heavyweight belt against Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.
