Dana White Says He’s Going To Loosen Up Rules On Fighters Smoking Marijuana

Dana White says he is thinking of loosening up the restrictions on fighters Smoking Marijuana as more and more fighters fail a drug test for Marijuana.

On Wednesday, several UFC fighters including welterweight Niko Price and lightweight Kevin Croom were suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. They tested positive for Marijuana in their system during recent bouts in Las Vegas. The price tested positive following a draw against Donald Cerrone, while Croom tested positive in a pre-fight test. His submission win over Roosevelt Roberts was overturned to a No Contest.

As a result, Kevin Croom had to pay $1,800 (£1380) as a fine and was banned for four and a half months. Not just that, his submission win over Roosevelt Roberts was also overturned into a no-contest. Niko Price, on the other hand, saw his temporary suspension extended after he tested positive following his fight against Donald Cerrone, which ended in an impressive draw. Apart from Niko Price and Kevin Croom, NSAC has punished many fighters for the same, including Tim Elliott, Jamahal Hill, and Trevin Jones.

Dana White on Marijuana issue

UFC president White insisted fighters should continue to be tested for the drug but wants to see some of the rules changed. Dana White claimed that some tough rules need to be changed but he still wants fighters to be tested for drugs as he doesn’t want anyone to enter the octagon “high”.

“I didn’t even know (about Price being suspended). We’ve been working on (changing the marijuana rules) for a long time,” he said as per BJ Penn.com.

“I’m surprised that happened. They must have been way over the threshold then. I didn’t even know. “I don’t think you can’t test. When you’re in-competition you have to test these guys. You can’t let somebody go into the ring high. It just can’t happen, you know? So yeah. I don’t know what to do with that. But we’re trying to, you know, what’s the word I’m looking for, we’re trying to loosen it up. But at the same time, you can’t have guys showing up high.”

Some UFC stars have admitted to being regular users of marijuana, with Nate Diaz last year smoking a joint at an open workout while MMA veteran Cerrone has publicly advocated for fighters to be able to use cannabis as an alternative to pain killers.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan has spoken about the high usage of weed among fighters on numerous occasions and previously said: ‘The weird thing about martial arts, a tremendous amount of UFC fighters smoke pot (marijuana).

“I mean, a massive amount where it’s a huge issue with them involving drug tests, where they have to stop smoking weed for the last four weeks or so to pass drug tests. More UFC fighters smoke pot than don’t smoke pot.”
