UFC CEO Dana White has revealed the main and co-main events for the UFC’s return to Atlanta, Georgia.
White revealed on Instagram Live that Joaquin Buckley and former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman would square off in the card’s main event. Atlanta, Georgia’s State Farm Arena will host the tournament on June 14.
Since losing by majority decision to Khamzat Chimaev at middleweight in a fight he entered on short notice in October 2023, Kamaru Usman (20-4) has not competed. Prior to that, Usman lost his welterweight belt to Leon Edwards via majority decision after the Brit knocked him out.
Kamaru Usman, the former champion, is currently ranked fourth in the welterweight division. He successfully defended the title five times, defeating Gilbert Burns, Jorge Masvidal, and Colby Covington twice.
In contrast, Joaquin Buckley (21-6), who is currently ranked sixth at welterweight, recently defeated Covington via TKO. Buckley has a 6-0 record since stepping down to welterweight, with victories over Vicente Luque and Stephen Thompson.
The women’s flyweight match between Rose Namajunas and Miranda Maverick is the co-main event of UFC Atlanta.
In November, Rose Namajunas (13-7) lost to Erin Blanchfield via decision. Namajunas had previously defeated Amanda Ribas and Tracy Cortez, but the defeat ended her two-fight winning streak. At flyweight, Namajunas is ranked sixth. After increasing to 125 pounds, the former strawweight champion is now 2-2.
In contrast, Miranda Maverick (15-5) recently defeated Jamey-Lyn Horth via decision in December. Maverick is currently on a four-fight winning streak and is 8-3 in the UFC. In the flyweight class, she is placed 12th. She has notably defeated Priscila Cachoeira, Andrea Lee, and Gillian Robertson in the UFC.
