The Fight for the next no.1 contender
Tony Ferguson vs Dustin Poirier will be one for the ages. Two of the most dynamic fighters in the game will be fighting for the next challenger for the lightweight championship. Tony Ferguson last fought at UFC 249 when he had to face a devastating loss in which he took a brutal beating by the hands of Justin Gaethje.
Before that loss, Tony Ferguson was on a spectacular 12-fight win streak with wins over Donald Cerrone, Kevin Lee, Anthony Pettis, Edson Barboza. Tony Ferguson was set to fight the lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 249 which got canceled due to the current pandemic situation as Khabib was unable to fly out of Russia. This fight was scheduled for the 5th time. Later on, Ferguson was set to fight Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. The fight didn’t go the way as Ferguson would have hoped it would play out. Gaethje put on a show that day and got a TKO victory over Ferguson and become the interim lightweight champion.
Dustin Poirier recently fought against Dan Hooker in an absolute classic. It was a dog fight where both fighters refused to give up. Hooker looked good in the early rounds but Poirier was picking up the pace slowly and once it went to 4th and 5th round it was the sheer volume of punches by Poirier that got him the decision win.
‘The Diamond’ returned to the win column by securing the unanimous decision victory over Dan Hooker. Dustin Poirier’s last defeat came by the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in what was a lightweight title unification match in Abu Dhabi. Before that fight, Poirier had defeated Max Holloway to win the interim championship at UFC 236.
If this fight does happen then it will be a very important fight in the lightweight division and one of the biggest lightweight matchups. It’s a very intriguing fight as Poirier is just one win away from another title shot and the same goes with Ferguson as one more win over a top guy will grant Ferguson a shot at the lightweight belt. Also at UFC 254, Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to defend his belt against Justin Gaethje.
Who do you guys think will win if Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier?
