UFC president Dana White has said that top bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili not fighting his friend and the current bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling would be ‘a really bad idea’.

In the main event of UFC Fight Night 221 at The Theater at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, Dvalishvili established a record most takedown attempts and defeated former champion Petr Yan by unanimous decision. The champion Aljamain Sterling, Dvalishvili’s best friend and primary training partner, was the only person standing in his way.

For most fighters, a crack at the title would be the next stop after his impressive performance and his position in the division. Dvalishvili, however, finds himself in a bit of a pickle because he and his friend Sterling have made a pact not to fight.

White advises Dvalishvili to rethink that agreement because she has witnessed it occur several times in the past.

I don’t remember who the hell I was talking to the other day about this, and I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t have to deal with that bullsh*t anymore,’” White told reporters during a news conference Saturday. “You know, back in the early days, the camps were so small, you didn’t have a lot of different options. So, we had a lot of these guys saying, ‘Oh, he’s my friend, he’s my friend.’

You can still be friends and want what your friend has, you know what I mean? It would be a really bad idea for Merab to go down that path.
