Many fierce rivalries in the UFC have started at press conferences and ended inside the Octagon, but for Daniel Cormier (22-3), the notion of ‘fake friendship’ doesn’t apply once the fight is over.
Case in point? The former two division champion is glad that he and Jon Jones (26-1) didn’t embrace one another following their first encounter at UFC 182.
The rivalry between Cormier and Jones is one of the biggest in the history of the UFC and vendetta initiated prior to their first faceoff and ran its course all the way into their two fight saga that ended with UFC 214.
Things that go so far can’t just be buried once the fight is over: Cormier revisits his rivalry with Jones
DC was reminded of his tussle with ‘Bones’ following the clash between Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann at the main event of UFC Vegas 37. After a submission victory over Spann, Smith made some verbal reposes to his adversary’s pre-fight comments.
Cormier, who has had his fair share of pre and post fight verbal missiles, supported Smith and shared his opinion on Twitter.
“I have no problem with the way Anthony Smith just acted when you talk all that shit and you get beat the way Ryan Spann just got beat we don’t need to shake hands and hug Anthony is an OG and do not play. Really was an easy night for @lionheartasmith great job!!” Cormier tweeted.

DC’s tweet was shared by ESPN and on that post, Twitter user by the name @Dcanngieter reminded the former Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight champion that he “Didn’t act that way after Jon beat you the 1st time”, referring to the aftermath of UFC 182 where Jones defeated Cormier via unanimous decision.
To that, Cormier said he was happy there was no post-fight bonding or anything on similar notion with his rival, and it continued all the way into their rematch at UFC 214, where Jones originally won via KO, but the result was overturned into a No Contest after Jones tested positive for a turinabol metabolite.
“There was no hug and I’m happy he didn’t hug me I didn’t or don’t need that. The things that go so far can’t just be buried once the fight is over. I was sad at presser and Jones showed no pity. It was perfect! No fake friends once the fight is done!” Cormier responded.
