UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya will take on top contender Paulo Costa on September 19 in a highly anticipated match-up. It will be the featured fight of UFC 253.

The location of the fight hasn’t been revealed and it was first reported by Combate and confirmed by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

The announcement of the fight has fans around the world hyped including former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, Cormier revealed how the Brazilian star ‘breaks’ his sparring partner.

It’s hard to know who is gonna get the victory,” Cormier said. “As good as he [Israel] is, I believe Paulo Costa is just as skilled, just as talented and as powerful as any guy that I have ever seen

This guy looks like a heavyweight fighting at 185 pounds. I don’t know how he makes weight, I was talking to one of his coaches Eric Albaraccin and they were talking about a guy who was going to be his [Paulo] training partner, a guy I used to use and I was like ‘Yeah he is tough, he works hard, he will always fight you’ and he goes ‘Good, because, Paulo needs so many guys, because a week and a half in, he breaks them and he has to replace the training partners,” Cormier said.

Because he doesn’t go to protect his training partners, he goes through you and then ‘Give me the next guy’…reminds me of Cain [Velasquez] back in the day,” Daniel Cormier concluded.

Paulo Costa fires back at Daniel Cormier

While Paulo Costa was complementing Paulo Costa, the Brazilian star may have taken the compliment the wrong way.

Shut the fuck up DC. The KoB loves his training partners. Who wants came to be sparring tomorrow against me folks?,” Paulo Costa tweeted.

He then clarified that, he brings professional fighters for real sparring and that he didn’t need to protect them.

I bring the pro fighters to do real sparring with me , so I believe I don’t need protect them. God is who protects us,” Paulo Costa said.

Paulo Costa was supposed to fight Israel Adesanya in March earlier this year. But the Brazilian had to undergo an arm surgery that forced him to remain out of the Octagon for almost eight months.

This resulted in UFC matching up Israel Adesanya with Yoel Romero at UFC 248 despite the Cuban being coming off of two back to back loses. Paulo Costa is coming off of a decision win over Yoel Romero at UFC 241 last August.
