Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier has spoken up on the recent brawl that took place between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington away from the Octagon, weeks after UFC 272, with Masvidal accused of assaulting Covington at a restaurant. Cormier has slammed Masvidal for attacking Covington, saying that he had 25 minutes to do the same just two weeks before.
Daniel Cormier condemns Masvidal’s actions against Covington: You had 25 minutes less than two weeks ago to do everything you wanted
In the main event of UFC 272 which took place on 5th March, Covington had picked up a unanimous decision victory over Masvidal. Last weekend, just a little more than two weeks later, “Chaos” went out for drinks and dinner at Papi Steak restaurant in Miami, which Masvidal was made aware of.
According to initial reports, as well as one eyewitness account, Masvidal ganged up on Covington with four-five more men outside the restaurant, and struck his former buddie a couple times, resulting in fractured teeth and a damaged wrist. The incident is currently under investigation by the Miami Beach Police Department and if Covington decides to pursue legal action, Masvidal will face felony charges.
Following the incident, several mixed martial arts icons have spoken up about the altercation, including UFC commentator and former light heavyweight and heavyweight titleholder Daniel Cormier, who opined that “Gamebred” had 25 minutes in the cage to take hisgrudge out on Covington.
“Here’s the thing, a lot of these altercations happen prior to fights happening. You have 25 minutes, and this is the only place I’m going to condemn Jorge Masvidal. You had 25 minutes less than two weeks ago to do everything you wanted,” Cormier said on the DC & RC podcast.
It doesn’t seem as though, this was a come face to face, and we get into a fight. This seems a little bit different. That’s where it seems off,” the 43-year-old added. [H/T BJPenn.com]
Aside from DC, Ben Askren, who has shared a bitter rivalry with Masvidal in the past, spoke up on the incident as well, denouncing the attack on Covington and indirectly accusing Masvidal of having insecurity or anger issues for the loss.
”Imagine having 25 minutes to punch someone as many times as you want legally, but you can’t get it done so you gotta sneak up at the steak house 😂😂 The couple times I got beat up I just thought shit that sucked I should trained harder or employed better tactics. Not let me sneak up and attack him on the street bc I have anger/insecurity issues.“ said Askren, “Jorge also talked about my family so he is being a hypocritical terd on top of all else. Suck it up butter cup, you got whipped. It happens sometimes.”
Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, however, had a contrasting take on the whole incident, standing beside Masvidal and justifying his attack on Covington away from the Octagon.
“Colby Covington’s a ho if he’s trying to press charges on my dog. A fight’s a fight. You just fought him in a cage. If ya’ll still ain’t settled it by then, then shit might have to go again. It might be for free this time.” said Woodley said on Instagram Live. [H/T BJPenn.com]
