According to UFC analyst Daniel Cormier, the next matchup is probably Islam Makhachev vs. Justin Gaethje.
January marked the UFC lightweight champion’s most recent octagon appearance. Arman Tsarukyan was originally scheduled to meet Islam Makhachev in Los Angeles, but the Armenian was ejected on the day of the weigh-in. Renato Moicano ended up replacing the Russian on short notice as a result. In the end, Makhachev defeated “Money Moicano” by submission in just one round.
Ilia Topuria has been connected to Islam Makhachev on numerous occasions in recent months. In order to get ready for a lightweight shift, “El Matador” notoriously gave up his UFC featherweight title in February. But earlier this year, Makhachev reportedly turned down a chance to compete against Topuria, claiming he was inexperienced at 155 pounds.
Daniel Cormier thinks he knows what will happen next because the UFC lightweight champion has no opponent scheduled. Speaking in a video that was just posted to his YouTube account, “DC” predicted that the next fight at 155 pounds will probably be between Islam Makhachev and Justin Gaethje. For the record, “The Highlight” just returned to the octagon.

The hard-hitting former interim champion defeated Rafael Fiziev via majority decision at UFC 313 last month. Justin Gaethje demanded a long-shot title fight against Islam Makhachev after the fight. Daniel Cormier thinks a battle with “The Highlight” is the biggest one possible, even if he is aware that the champion might face numerous opponents.
“I understand that since there isn’t a definite number one contender, it would be justified [to give Ilia Topuria a title shot].” About the next battle with Islam Makhachev, Daniel Cormier said. Renato Moicano merely competed for the title. Arman Tsarukyan is the obvious front-runner, although Charles Oliveria is another fighter with a winning record if he is not the next. Prior to facing Arman, he was scheduled to compete for the title after defeating Michael Chandler. There are men, then.
He continued, “… I honestly believe that’s who’s going to fight for the belt, [Justin] Gaethje. It’s going to be Gaethje. That’s, if I’m team Makhachev, I’m asking for Gaethje. That’s a big name fight, that’s a guy who carries a lot of name recognition. I think that’s going to be the fight, if I’m being honest with you.”
