Yesterday, Daniel Cormier got knocked out by Stipe Miocic in the fourth round at the main event of UFC 241 in Anaheim. California. This was the first heavyweight loss of his career.
Before his outing against Miocic, he hadn’t even lost a round at heavyweight and for the most part till round three, Cormier was leading on scorecards, but it all came crashing down when Miocic started targetting Cormier’s body and knocked him out in the fourth round with a barrage of shots.
Cormier who turned 40 earlier this year in March had previously hinted at retirement, but he didn’t make any announcement after his loss at UFC 241.
“A lot of times, we base decisions in emotions,” Cormier told reporters post-fight press conference at UFC 241. “I don’t want to be that guy. I’m going to go back and talk to (my wife) Salina and talk to my coaches and we’ll figure out what’s next.”
Cormier had previously acknowledged that not listening to his coaches cost him the fight and that he was doing pretty well earlier in the fight.
“I felt like I was doing pretty good,” Cormier said. “Then he landed that shot – in the fourth round he landed those good body punches, then that shot I didn’t see and he got the finish. He did a good job.
“I kind of took the pressure off a little bit. I don’t know why. Maybe try to treat and recover for the fifth round because he wasn’t going anywhere. I don’t know what the reasoning behind it was. But obviously, it was a mistake.”
“Losing is just terrible for me,” Cormier said. “I’m a competitive guy and just losing any type of fight is terrible. Being finished, to me it’s just insane.” (H/T- MMAJunkie.com)
