Daniel Cormier is the current UFC Heavyweight Champion and is expected to defend his title against Derrick Lewis on this coming Saturday night’s event, UFC 230. However, that is not his only title. He is also the holder of the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. While it was expected that he would be stripped off the title for the UFC 232 fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustaffson that might not be the case.

Daniel Cormier is set to face Derrick Lewis at UFC 23o

With Jon Jones and Alexander Gustaffson are facing each other at UFC 232. Cormier has not defended his Light Heavyweight Title since his fight with Volkan Oezdemir earlier in the year. Since then, he has moved up to the Heavyweight Division as well, whose title he now holds.

The natural expectation was that Cormier would not be moving down to Light Heavyweight to defend his title again, and he would have to be stripped off the Championship, while others competed for it.

However, in a promo before UFC Fight Night 138: Moncton, Daniel Cormier said that he would be back to defend the UFC Light Heavyweight Title again. The promo talked about the fight between Oezdemir and Anthony Smith and seemed to imply the winner would face DC for a title shot. With Smith winning, that would put make him the contender for the Title fight.

This could mean that Jon Jones faces Alexander Gustafsson for the Interim UFC Light Heavyweight Title, and the winner between that fight would end up facing the winner of the possible Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Smith fight, for the Undisputed Championship.
