2020 was a historical year for the world. The ongoing pandemic wreaked havoc amongst communities, businesses and livelihood of people. The year was also a turning point for many sports organisations including UFC, which is the biggest MMA organisation in the world.

Despite the Covid outbreak, UFC was the first organisation to bring back live events. UFC president Dana White dared to open up his organisation for business and as a result, the company had a highly successful year.

We also saw numerous fighters rise up to the occasion and perform to the best of their abilities. One such fighter was Deiveson Figueiredo, who not only captured the UFC flyweight title in 2020 but also managed to headline back to back pay-per-view cards.

Deiveson Figueiredo fought four times in the year 2020 and during this time, he improved his professional record to 3-1. He started the year by taking on Joseph Benavidez at UFC Fight Night 169 in February earlier this year. That fight was for the vacant UFC flyweight title, but Figueiredo wasn’t eligible to fight for the title as he came in overweight. None the less, he knocked out Benavidez in the second round.

The pair fought in a rematch in July at the Fight Island and this time Deiveson Figueiredo left no doubt as he made weight and submitted Benavidez via rear-naked choke in the first round.

Deiveson Figueiredo’s first title defense came against Alex Perez at UFC 255. He headlined the PPV card and in that fight, he put on a clinic by defeating Perez via guillotine choke submission in the first round. Just a week after UFC 255, he accepted the short-notice fight against Brandon Moreno to headline UFC 256 which took place earlier this month.

Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno fought in a tremendous back and forth action. The fight ended in a draw, but it is one of the top contenders for the ‘Fight of the Year’.

He has now expressed his interest in fighting Moreno in a rematch, which will take place next year.

For the amazing year that Deiveson Figueiredo has had, he is MMA India Show’s Fight of the Year award.
