Former UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo has stated that the new UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno is scared to fight the trilogy fight against the former champion and is running away from the fight. Deiveson became the flyweight champion after defeating Joseph Benavidez for the vacant UFC Flyweight Championship at UFC Fight Night 172. The duo had previously fought where Deiveson won but he weighed in above the 125lbs limit and even after winning the fight he wasn’t crowned the champion. After winning the belt he fought Alex Perez in his first title defense and won the fight easily in the very first round.
After a successful defense of his title at UFC 255, Figueiredo faced Brandon Moreno at UFC 256. This was the UFC’s fastest championship turnaround, at 21 days. After five rounds of a back-and-forth battle, the fight was declared a majority draw. The rematch took between the two at UFC 263 where Moreno submitted Figueiredo via a rear-naked choke submission in round three and become the new champion.
Deiveson Figueiredo wants the trilogy fight with Brandon Moreno
After facing defeat in the rematch, the former champion has been rooting for the trilogy fight but the new champion seems unbothered by that call out and wants to move on to the next fight. Deiveson though feels like Moreno is running away from fighting him again.
“He was a rogue. Now he is running away from the fight. He knows the only fight he’s going to sell is me and him. He doesn’t want to lose the belt. He is now even more arrogant, more playboy. I want the rematch and I’m going to show that I wasn’t doing well in the second fight. In the first fight I broke him in the fight, he shrank back to not get knocked out. I gave the rematch and now he does a nasty thing like that? Why isn’t it time? Why doesn’t he have a fight in Mexico? What makes me pissed the most is seeing him pay at a loss and not wanting our trilogy,” Figueiredo told AG Fight.
“He had to be a man and assume the position of champion. I defended (the belt) against him. He knows I won’t let go. I’m going to do the same as the first one (fight), which was sick and I fought well. It became personal. I don’t even like to look at his posts, it makes me nauseous. The will is to go out on a fight with him. It’s a two-wire stop, when it meets, it’s short-circuited, it’s on fire.”
