UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo is all set to put his title on the line against Brandon Moreno in the main event of UFC 256.
Deiveson Figueiredo has been the breakthrough fighter of the year as he defeated Joseph Benavidez in July earlier this year to become the UFC flyweight champion and then he successfully defended his title last month at UFC 255 by submitting Alex Perez in the first round.
Even for his upcoming fight against Brandon Moreno, he is a massive favourite (1.30). While this should be enough to convince people that the hype around Deiveson Figueiredo is real, but the former UFC flyweight and ONE Championship contender Demetrious Johnson feels that he needs to see more of him to know if the hype is real.
Demetrious Johnson himself held the UFC flyweight title and defended it 11-times inside the Octagon before eventually losing it to Henry Cejudo in 2018.
“Only time will tell if the hype is real,” Demetrious Johnson said of Figueiredo. “Do I think he’s a good athlete? 1,000 percent. But I need to see him fight more different styles and different athletes and the caliber of different guys. Then that’s when he’ll live up to the hype. A guy like Jon Jones, he’s beat (expletive) everybody, even on cocaine and testing positive and whatever. He still beat you.”
Deiveson Figueiredo vs Henry Cejudo?
Demetrious Johnson even went on to say that he would like to see Deiveson Figueiredo fight former champion Henry Cejudo if the Brazilian wants to reach the next level.
“I would like to see him fight a Henry Cejudo or see him fight someone who is game and is able to win,” Johnson said. “Alex Perez got caught in that choke, he just stood up. He should’ve hand fight, do the correct things to get out of it. That’s the thing: Only time will tell. Only time’s going to tell. When I fought Joseph Benavidez the first time, I beat him up. Then we fought the second time and I knocked him out.”
“Deiveson Figueiredo is a great athlete, he hits hard, has a good chin and he’s well rounded. People who usually hit hard can’t really grapple, but he can do it all.” Demetrious Johnson said. (H/T – MMAJunkie.com)
