Derrick Lewis might be coming from a one-off loss to the UFC Heavyweight Champion, Daniel Cormier, but that does not mean he is ready to sit back. It appears that Derrick Lewis is ready for his next fight following his loss at UFC 23o. He even has an opponent in mind for his fight when he finally returns to the Octagon, and it is someone he has fought before — Francis Ngannou.
In 2018, Francis Ngannou had entered the year with a huge winning streak. It did not last long, as soon after that, he lost against then-UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic. The loss would be followed by a fight against another fighter with whom he had exchanged barbs before — Derrick Lewis. The fight between them was highly criticised for being boring, and neither fighter displayed any sort of ability. At the end, Lewis won the fight by decision, but in the eyes of the audience, they were both losers.
This is one impression that Lewis is eager to correct.
Lewis said he did not care if he was the #1 contender, but he needed to correct his mistake by taking on and defeating Francis Ngannou. He was even critical of his performance, saying he should sit and learn techniques.
“I have to right the wrong. I can’t retire without fighting Francis again – at least get in a good shot on the guy. Goddamn, I wish I would have gotten a good shot on him. We’ll see how this year plays out.” – h/t MMA Junkie
Francis Ngannou has his eyes on a Heavyweight title shot for the near future, however, this might be a fight which ends up happening.
