UFC veteran Diego Sanchez is in that phase of his career where he is not interested in fighting for a belt, instead, he is going to fight for his legacy and greatness by the end of his career.

Sanchez is one of those fighters who has been with UFC since the early days. Gaining fame from the first season of the TUF the Ultimate Fighter 2004. Since then Diego has been actively participating in the game. He is definitely at the end of his fighting career and will look to retire after his current contract ends

. Now, Sanchez is fighting to be remembered as great as he takes on Jake Matthews at UFC 253. The 38-year-old also says he sees similarities between his younger self and his opponent.

“I have nothing but respect for the young lad that is stepping up to the plate that is living his destiny, doing his thing. I see similarities in young Diego chasing his dream of a UFC welterweight gold belt (and Jake),” Sanchez said to James Lynch of Line Movement. “My destiny has changed, I’m not really chasing the gold belt anymore, I’m chasing greatness. I don’t need it a belt or a shiny gold belt buckle to say that I’m great. I’m transcending just being a fighter and bringing value to (the) human being that I have become and still evolving into.”

The Real Ultimate Fighter Diego Sanchez

The lone member of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Season 1 still competing in the UFC, Sanchez (30-12 MMA, 19-12 UFC) has won three of his last four fights. He most recently competed in February, winning via disqualification due to an illegal knee landed by opponent Michel Perreira. Matthews (16-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) has won five of his last six fights. He’s riding back-to-back wins over Rostem Akman and Emil Meek. His only loss since November 2016 came against Anthony Rocco Martin.

There is no question Diego Sanchez is a legend of the sport. He has seen lots of highs and lows in his professional fighting career and is still going strong as a hungry lion. Even at 38-years-old, it doesn’t seem like he has any desire to hang up the gloves as he is looking to build up his legacy even more.

Diego Sanchez knows the end is near. The 38-year-old Sanchez plans on finishing his storied career after honouring the latest contract he signed with the UFC. Sanchez signed a new four-fight deal after becoming a free agent in late 2019. He’s definitely going to be remembered as one of the best to do it and maybe a future hall of fame inductee.
