UFC 253 will feature an absolute slugfest as former title challenger Dominick Reyes will take on veteran Jan Blachowicz for the vacant light heavyweight title.

The booking came out of nowhere as light heavyweight king Jon Jones vacated the title to pursue an opportunity at heavyweight after UFC 252 clash between champ Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.

Jones has achieved everything the light heavyweight division has to offer and is opting for interesting and money-making matchups at heavyweight. Jones’ former opponent, Reyes, however, believes he’s the reason why Jones is moving up. Speaking in an interview, ‘The Dominator’ did not hold himself back. (via sportbible):

“He’s moving to heavyweight because those guys are slow,” Reyes told Ariel Helwani. “You do realize that, right? He can’t keep up with us anymore. After what me and Thiago [Santos] did to him, he’s like, ‘Man, I need to go up. These guys are getting too fast, they’re getting too athletic, they’re getting too good.’ The heavyweights are still slow.”

“I think his ego won’t let him admit that I’m the reason [he moved up]. I know he doesn’t want to rematch me. He gave up the belt. You don’t give up something you’re proud of… You earned that sh*t. Why would you just give it up unless you felt like you didn’t earn it?”

Reyes channeling his focus to Blachowicz!

Reyes took on Jones for the light heavyweight title at UFC 247 back in February. He put up a great performance overall as he started looking great but rightfully slowed down in the later rounds and suffered a controversial unanimous decision defeat to Jones. However, many thought Reyes had done enough to walk with a win that day.

Regardless, Reyes has decided to channelize his entire focus on Jan Blachowicz, who himself can be a daunting assignment for anybody in the light heavyweight class.

“At this point, I don’t really give a sh*t about Jon Jones. He’s irrelevant to my life right now… We’ll see what the future holds, my friends.”
