UFC: Dustin Poirier still believes Conor McGregor fight makes sense as he targets return in March or April

Former interim lightweight champion and title challenger Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier still has his eyes on an unprecedented rematch against former double champ and superstar ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

McGregor himself announced that he would make his much anticipated return on January 18 with Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone expected to be the frontrunner to face him. However it has been recently unfolded that the card on January 18 would be a ‘Fight Night’ and not a PPV, which by default, makes McGregor’s return irrelevant and pushes it further to March and April.

Apparently Poirier, who’s fresh from being under the knife almost two weeks ago, is expected to make his return around the similar timeframe which makes him a suitable candidate for McGregor.

“I’ll be training hard in January and I think that late March, early April is realistic,” Poirier said about booking his next fight. “My doctor thinks that’s a realistic return. I’m going to start training hard in January and I’m actually going to be getting in shape all through December.”

That being said, after defeating four world champions in a row before eventually colliding against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Poirier believes he deserves a fight preferably against McGregor which would ‘excite’ him.

“When they offer me a name that gets me excited then that will be the right one,” Poirier said. “A Conor [McGregor], a Nate Diaz, a Khabib [Nurmagomedov], a Tony [Ferguson], those kinds of guys get me excited.

“I just want fights like that. Fights that get me excited. Fights that are going to be exciting.”

Poirier suffered a first round knockout loss against McGregor back at UFC 178 back in September 2014 at featherweight. The setback however inspired a move up to lightweight where Poirier worked up to the title with an impressive record of 9-2.
