UFC 242 featured a unification bout as interim champion Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier suffered a crushing third round submission defeat against dominant champion Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov.

Poirier without a doubt, had one of the most difficult runs towards the title. Needless to say, Poirier was extremely disappointed as he even hinted retirement in his post-fight social media post claiming, “Thank you guys for the support, it means a lot to me,” Poirier said in a video posted to social media. “If I choose to fight again, I’ll be back strong. If not I’ll see what God has in store for me.”

However some good news was delivered to the Poirier fans as the former interim champ took to social media claiming he has some more fight left in him. (via Instagram):

“Didn’t get the result I wanted Saturday. This is what happens sometimes when you’re chasing greatness. I gave this my all. I’m down but not out.

Thank you to everyone for the kind messages and support. It means the world to me. This one really hurts. It’s a hurt that I’m very familiar with…” – Dustin Poirier on Instagram.

Poirier had his brief moments as he even tagged Nurmagomedov in his second round. However that was short lived as Nurmagomedov was able to do what he does the best, mauling Poirier before submitting him.

Poirier defeated four format and current champions in a row to earn a title shot. Poirier would like to have some time to recuperate and get back on winning ways.
