Dustin Poirier, a name synonymous with resilience and tenacity in the world of mixed martial arts, finds himself at a crossroads in his illustrious career. Despite hinting at retirement following his recent bout at UFC 302, Poirier’s passion for the sport remains undiminished. In a candid interview, he revealed his internal struggle, stating, “I’m still in the same spot like I’m kind of on the fence. If a big fight came along that was exciting, that was dangerous, I would probably take it. But, I still love this. That’s the problem. I still love fighting”.
Poirier’s journey in the UFC has been marked by significant victories and heart-wrenching defeats. Known for his relentless fighting style and ability to bounce back from setbacks, Poirier has faced some of the toughest competitors in the lightweight division. His recent loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 via a fifth-round submission was a tough pill to swallow, leading many to speculate about his future in the sport.
The Love for the Fight
Despite the physical toll and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with being a professional fighter, Poirier’s love for the sport is evident. “I love the lifestyle. I love waking up and having a goal to prepare for, a battle. I’m the kind of person I need that every day or I’d go crazy,” he shared. This passion is what keeps him training, even when he’s not actively preparing for a fight. “I’m still training, still running, still lifting. I haven’t been doing much MMA or jiu-jitsu because my ribs and my knee and my nose can’t yet, but we’ll see. I think I’m going to fight again”.
