The fireworks will surely fly when highly rated UFC lightweights Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will go head-to-head inside the octagon. Poirier has been putting in some really strong performances and will be looking to continue his dominant run. While he is usually a man of a few words, he recently had plenty to say about his upcoming opponent. While Poirier has been talking particularly about Gaethje, he recently talked about the newly crowned UFC lightweight champion Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov.
The indomitable Dagestani is still undefeated in his MMA career with a record of 26-0. He is also currently on a nine fight winning streak inside the octagon. He is a black belt in Judo and is also a two time world Combat Sport champion and a highly phenomenal freestyle wrestler. His undefeated streak of twenty six wins, is currently one of the longest undefeated streaks in MMA.
He was considered by many to be the uncrowned champion at lightweight. However, the Russian finally had his coronation at UFC 223 by defeating Al Iaquinta.
The fight was surrounded by a lot of controversy as Nurmagomedov’s opponents. From Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson, to Max “Blessed” Holloway, to Anthony Pettis. Conor “The Notorious” McGregor was also involved in a huge altercation at Barclays Centre. While post-fight, another huge controversy occurred related to Joe Rogan’s commentary for Khabib’s performance.
Poirier was recently in conversation with MMA Junkie. He talked about how he wasn’t impressed by the UFC 223 headliner and also claimed that his fight with Gaethje will decide the number 1 contender. Here’s what he had to say:
He is the champion; he has the belt, but I don’t feel that was a championship fight. Nothing against either guy, Khabib was on the way and earned himself the spot to get that title shot. But that fight, to me, didn’t feel like a title fight.
I think this is the No. 1 contender fight, we’ll see what happens, but the division’s played itself where this fight matters, a lot.
