Former Interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier feels he should have been the betting favourite while going into the Conor Mcgregor rematch at UFC 257.

Top UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier has been at the top of the sport for the longest time and heading into his rematch against Conor McGregor feels as though he should be the favourite.

In the main event of UFC 257, Poirier is set to rematch Conor McGregor in a highly-anticipated fight. The first time they met, McGregor scored a first-round KO, but that was in 2014, and at featherweight.

Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker engaged in one of the best fights of 2020, a five-round war last June that Poirier ultimately won by unanimous decision. That victory put Poirier in the driver’s seat as he pursues another shot at the UFC lightweight championship, and on Saturday he’ll compete in one of the biggest fights of his career -a rematch with Conor McGregor at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Dustin Poirier on being the Underdog

Entering this fight, many believe it is a lot different but McGregor is a -325 favourite with “The Diamond” being a +250 underdog. For Dustin, he says he is used to being the underdog but doesn’t believe he should be. Speaking to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, Poirier shared some reasons why he feels like he shouldn’t be the underdog heading into this weekend’s main event.

“Man I’ve been the underdog in so many fights and got my hand raised, I’ve been the underdog my whole life,” he explained. “I’m comfortable in this position and no I do not think I should be.”

“I’ve been putting in the work, I’ve been beating the best guys in the world, I’ve been in these battles, and getting my hand raised I always find a way.”

Going into the rematch much like their initial matchup Dustin enters the higher-ranked opponent, however, with the initial win and popularity behind McGregor, he will enter the UFC 257 main event again as the favourite.

The buildup for the second fight between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier has been very different from the first fight. ‘The Notorious’ is known for his psychological warfare and has an uncanny ability to get under his opponent’s skin and go into the fight, one-up on his opponent. He displayed this extremely well in 2014. During the buildup, Conor relentlessly talked trash and taunted Dustin at every opportunity he got. He was able to get under his skin, and that was apparent from the very first exchange during the fight. However, this has changed in 2021.

Conor McGregor is coming off a 40-second knockout win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. The fight marked his return to the sport after he was submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at UFC 229. The Irishman scored KO wins over Eddie Alvarez and Jose Aldo to win the lightweight and featherweight titles.
