Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier is all set to take on the former featherweight and lightweight champion in a rematch at UFC 257 this weekend in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The fight is a rematch from when the pair fought seven years ago at UFC 178. In that fight, Dustin Poirier was knocked out in the first round. At that time the fight took place in the featherweight division, and the Louisiana native has been on a tear ever since having gone 10-2 in the lightweight division.

Now for his upcoming rematch, Dustin Poirier has given a bold prediction. In an interview with UFC UFC countdown, Poirier said that he is going to knock out Conor McGregor in the first round.

Knock him out in the first round and get out of there. That is the way I want to see this fight end,” Poirier said on UFC countdown. “January 23 I will get my hand raised by any means necessary.”

How can Dustin Poirier beat Conor McGregor?

Dustin Poirier is entering the fight as a heavy underdog and although bookmakers don’t seem to have a lot of confidence in Dustin Poirier, there are certain guidelines that he can follow in order to beat the Irishman. In an interview with Sportskeeda, Dan Hardy revealed what Dustin Poirier needs to do in order to beat Conor McGregor.

Poirier has got to use his footwork. He’s got to be on his toes. He’s got to cut into McGregor’s lead leg (with kicks) and not engage. He’s got to see McGregor as a faceless opponent. Poirier can’t get drawn into the emotional side of it because then he’s going to want to throw hands,” considered Hardy.

If he can be strategic and land one or two calf kicks, that can really change McGregor’s game. That not only is going to buy him time in the first few minutes, but it will also slow McGregor down, take his mobility away and take away a lot of the power from his left hand. Then, that’s when Poirier can start to put the foot on the gas and start to diversify and attack a bit. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he forces McGregor to grapple. I think the physical presence of McGregor is going to be a factor though,” Hardy concluded.
