UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is set for his first title defense against the No.1 ranked lightweight fighter, Dustin Poirier. The duo is set to face each other at UFC 269 which will be taking place on December 11, at the location and venue which is yet to be decided. The fight will be the main event of the card. In the co-main event, the two-division women’s champion Amanda Nunes will be defending her bantamweight title against Julianna Pena. According to the reports, UFC is also targeting to set a men’s flyweight title fight between the champion Brandon Moreno and challenger Alexandre Pantoja as the second co-main event of this card.
The news of Charles Oliveira fighting Dustin Poirier at UFC 269 was first reported by MMAFighting.com. The fight will be an interesting matchup considering the kind of journey both of these fighters shave had till now in the UFC. These two have had to pass through a long road of challenges before getting to the top of their division. Both of them are among that fighter who had to fight the most fights before getting a title shot. Chares has fought 28 fights in the UFC before getting a crack at the title whereas Dustin fought nearly 23 fights before getting a crack at the undisputed title. This fight will be a very interesting point in both of their careers.
Charles Oliveira last fought at UFC 262 against the newcomer Michael Chandler for the vacant UFC lightweight champion after the former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from the sport. The fight was filled with twists and turns as it was Chandler who won the first round and was nearly going to finish Oliveira in that round. But Charles turned the fight upside down as he knocked out Chandler in the second round of the fight and become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. He will be entering this fight while riding a nine-fight win streak.
Dustin Poirier on the other hand has earned two back-to-back wins over former two-division champion Conor Mcgregor. He is also riding a three-fight win streak as he defeated Dan Hooker after losing the title fight against Khabib. Dustin Poirier is one of the toughest fighters in the division and at this point of his career, to win the title is the only thing remaining in his life as he has mentioned on several occasions. This is a perfect stylistic matchup as Poirier is known for his striking while Oliveira is the superior grappler.
