Top ranked UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier has been on an absolute tear in recent years ever since his knockout loss to Michael Johnson in 2016. He is currently on a three fight win streak and hasn’t lost in his last five fights. He has also dispatched all the other contenders apart from Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson, thus putting himself in prime position to receive a title shot against the champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, after the recent NSAC hearing which ruled that Nurmagomedov will have to serve a nine month long suspension, Poirier has sort of been left hanging. Thus, he has now openly stated that since Nurmagomedov is out due to his suspension, he will only fight Ferguson or McGregor.
It should be noted that Poirier and McGregor have previously fought before, at featherweight though. McGregor had won their first meeting, via TKO in round one.
Poirier recently took to Twitter to express his frustration with Khabib’s long suspension. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s gotta be Tony [Ferguson] or Conor [McGregor] or we redo my contract. Otherwise I’m not fighting. This company is [no. 1] bullshit.
