Eddie Hearn Claps Back At Devin Haney After Recent Criticism For not Pursuing Sandor Martin Fight: “He’s Sulking”

Devin Haney, the WBC lightweight champion, recently criticized Matchroom Boxing and its chairman, Eddie Hearn, for not pursuing a bid in the purse bids for his mandatory fight against Sandor Martin. The lone promotional company to make a bid was Top Rank, who plans to schedule the fight later this year.

In response, Eddie Hearn defended his decision not to bid, emphasizing the importance of having a long-term deal with a promoter. He stated that a promoter’s role is to protect the fighter and ensure they get paid, regardless of the fight’s quality. Hearn also pointed out that Haney, now a free agent with his own promotional company, cannot pick and choose when it suits him to take risks.

Eddie Hearn’s Response to Devin Haney

Hearn’s straightforward response to Haney’s criticism was, “The security from someone having a long-term deal with a promoter means that somebody has got your back 24/7… More importantly, someone has an obligation, good fight [or] bad fight, to make sure you’re protected and make sure you get paid.”

“What you can’t do, is be a free agent and pick and choose when it suits you what you do. ‘Cause when you do that, guess what? I’ll do the same… On a business level, I’m not doing my conkers on a fight like Haney-Sandor Martin… Why didn’t Devin Haney Promotions bid if this was such a good opportunity… Listen, he’s sulking. I like the fight for Devin, actually.”

The disagreement highlights the complexities of boxing promotions and the delicate balance between financial risk and fighter protection.

Devin Haney’s clash with Ryan Garcia in April resulted in a no-contest after Garcia failed two pre-fight drug tests. Haney’s undefeated status remains intact, but the Sandor Martin fight has become a point of contention between the fighter and his former promoter.
